CHARMING SRI LANKA

Tour Highlights

A visit to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage would suit those who want to get up close with these large pachyderms. The main attraction is the opportunity to observe the elephants bathing from the broad river bank, watching as the herds interact with one another, playing in the river. It is also possible to view other aspects of the elephants care such as bottle feeding of elephant calves and feeding of all other elephants. The orphanage tries to simulate the elephant’s natural environment as much as possible.

The cave temple at Dambulla is one of the most impressive in Asia. Consisting of five caves overhung by a vast rock towering 160metres over the surrounding plains, the temple was embellished with arched colonnades and gabled entrances in 1938 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. Each of the five caves at Dambulla house ancient statues of the Buddha and historic artwork depicting the Buddhas life

Polonnaruwa remains one of the best planned archaeological relic sites in Sri Lanka and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Ruins dating back almost 1000 years. Gal Vihara consists of four separate images, all cut from one large piece of granite. They include a 7m tall standing figure, a 14m long reclining figure and two seated figures, one larger than the other. These figures are considered to be some of the best examples of ancient Sri Lankan sculpting and carving arts.

The ancient rock fortress and palace of Sigiriya is one of the seven World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka. It has also been declared by UNESCO as the 8th Wonder of the world. From the 5th century BC, the fortress was used as a rock shelter mountain monastery, with caves prepared and donated by devotees to the Buddhist Sangha. Surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens and reservoirs, Sigiriya is steeped in history. An interesting feature of Sigiriya is the Mirror Wall. Made of a kind of porcelain, this wall was originally so well polished that the King could see his reflection as he walked alongside it. There was even a royal bathing pool on the summit, which still fills with rain water. Whether you are keen on art and history or not, a visit to Sigirya is a must for all to see the breath-taking views.

There really is no other feeling like it than riding an elephant through its native habitat. As you stroll past wildlife, trees and water reservoirs), the slow lolling movement from side to side makes an elephant ride here both relaxing and exhilarating in equal measure.

Visit a spice garden in Matale to see many different types the Matale spice gardens are among the best on the island. You will be introduced to different spices and shown how some of these spices are grown and processed. A processing and training unit has been set up in the area and farmers are grouped in a cooperative to ensure fair prices and you will also be able to purchase spices. A delightful place to stroll in fragrant greenery and learn about nutmeg, pepper vines, clove trees and curry, cinnamon and the precious cardamom, a relative of ginger. It grows in the shade of high jungle trees and can only be harvested by hand.

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic houses Sri Lankas most important Buddhist relic; a tooth of the Buddha. Said to have been snatched from the flames of the Buddhas funeral pyre in 483 BC, the tooth was smuggled into Sri Lanka during the 4th century AD, hidden in the hair of a princess. Today, the temple acts as a pilgrimage site for Sri Lankan Buddhists who will pay at least one visit to the temple during their lifetime. Monks still conduct worship in the inner chamber of the temple, performing rituals three times daily and witnessing this evening poojas are a magical experience.

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens were originally the royal pleasure gardens. Today, they are the largest botanical gardens in Sri Lanka covering 60 ha and bordered on three sides by the Mahaweli Ganga. Gardens collection of over 300 orchid species, avenues of royal palms, cannonball trees, a giant Javan fig tree and a fragrant spice garden

The hill capital of Sri Lanka is not only renowned for breath-taking topographies, but also for its enchanting form of dance style that is native to the isle. The Kandyan dance is a classical "dancing formation that brings out the true elegance of a human, creating image of great beauty. Majority say that Kandyan dance takes you on a sensational ride, but it cannot be completed unless the rhythmic movements are merged with the sensual beats of the Kandyan classical music that is native the proud community".

There is arguably no better or more relaxing way to experience this incredible part of the country. Passing densely covered tea plantations, remote villages and spectacular waterfalls, the train journey from Kandy up into the highest corners of the hills often stands out as one of Sri Lankas most unforgettable journeys.

Visiting a tea factory enables you to see, smell, taste and touch the tea at every stage of the production process, and gets an understanding of why certain teas taste as they do. Whilst travelling thorough Sri Lankas hill country why not stop off at a working tea factory and see how the green leaves of the fields become that steaming cuppa that so many of us love.

Devon and St. Claire's Waterfalls are located within easy reach from Governor's Mansion on Nuwara Eliya Road. A picnic is a good idea in our own mini coach.
