Highlights of This Itinerary

 

Overview : The Sri Lanka railway network, which was first started in 1864 during the colonial period, covers a wide network of routes that spreads across. In the 19th Century, during the British occupation of Sri Lanka, British constructed the railway lines and started the Railway service to transport Tea from the Hill country estates to Colombo in order to export them to various other countries and also they imported goods to Sri Lanka and transported them to the various hill stations. Because of this reason Sri Lanka's hill country Railway line goes through Tea Estates, thus making the train journey a scenic ride.


DAY 1ARRIVE / COLOMBO

On arrival at the Bandaranaike International airport, you will be warmly greeted by your very own chauffeur guide and transferred to Colombo (Approx. 1 hr 15 mins drive). On arrival in the hotel, spend the day at leisure relaxing and enjoying the hotel facilities. 


Spend overnight at Cinnamon Lake Side. Accommodation is in a Deluxe room with ensuite facilities. Your stay is on bed & breakfast basis.


DAY 2COLOMBO / KANDY

After breakfast you will be transferred to Fort railway station in Colombo. Do a train journey from Colombo to Kandy by Expo rail or Rajadhani Express.The train journey from Colombo to Kandy is a scenic delight. While not as many interesting stops as the ride down south, the epic surroundings of the Highlands will enthrall and some of the views will remain for a lifetime.


Colombo - Kandy

In the evening visit Temple of Tooth in Kandy. Located in Kandy, long a center of the Buddhist faith, the stunning 17th-century Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is believed to house the left upper canine tooth of the Lord Buddha himself. This precious relic attracts white-clad pilgrims, bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani, every day.

DAY 3KANDY

After breakfast you will be met by your chauffer guide and driven for approximately 1hr to reach Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.


The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage provides visitors with the best chance of seeing a large number of elephants at close quarters. The orphanage was established in 1975 and commenced with seven orphaned elephants. Today some of these orphans enjoy the fortune of seeing their calfs born in the same location. Assisted by local and foreign elephant experts, Pinnawala commenced a successful captive breeding program and the first baby elephant was born in 1984. It is most interesting to visit at feeding time to see the baby elephants being bottle fed and the entire herd taken for a bath thereafter to the river nearby.

 

In the afternoon,visit Peradeniya botanical gardens.The Royal Botanical Garden, Peradeniya is located in close proximity to the city of Kandy, which is the last kingdom of Sri Lanka and it is the capital of central province. And also Peradeniya botanical garden is near to Mahaweli River which is the longest river in Sri Lanka. The location and the environment of the garden are matching to spend a leisure time and it is a fantastic place to attract the tourists.

DAY 4KANDY/ NUWARA ELIYA

After breakfast you will be transferred to Peradeniya railway station. Do a train journey from Kandy to Nanu Oya by Expo rail or Rajadhani Express.This is a fabulous way of exploring the tea country. The morning railway journey from Kandy to the highlands of Nuwara Eliya, climbing uphill upto 6,000 ft above sea level, is one of the greatest railway journeys in the world. The dramatic landscape of the highlands stirs the senses as you wind past lush tea plantations, majestic peaks and rushing waterfalls.On your arrival at the Nanu Oya railway station, you will be picked up by your guide and transferred to Nuwara Eliya.


Peradeniya - Nanuoya

If time permits, visit a tea plantation and tea factory. Some of the world's finest tea is grown and processed in Sri Lanka - known around the world as Ceylon tea.

DAY 5NUWARA ELIYA

Today after breakfast you will be transferred to Horton Plains (approx. 2hrs). Walk around: From the main entrance you walk upto “Y” junction, and turn right and walk 4kms to reach Worlds End. If you continue walking in the same trail, you can witness the Baker’s falls. The round trip is 9.5kms, and it takes about three hours at leisurely pace.


World’s End:
 The plateau comes to a sudden end at World’s End, an escarpment that falls for nearly 01km, bringing forth glorious views all around from the edge of the Horton Plains. 


Fauna and Flora: Most significant feature of the fauna and flora of Horton Plains is its high endemicity. The grassy plains, which are interspersed with patches of evergreen Montana cloud forests, are home to Leopards, Sambur deer, Bear-monkeys and a rich array of birds, including number 
of endemic species.

DAY 6: NUWARA ELIYA / COLOMBO

After breakfast you will be transferred to Nanu Oya railway station to take the train back to Colombo (approx. 6hrs drive).

ARR: Colombo                  : 20.25 Hrs

DAY 7: COLOMBO / AIRPORT
After a leisurely breakfast you will be driven to Airport for departure (Approx. 1 hour and 15 minutes drive)
